Opiniones is designed to address the transitional problem between beginning and upper division courses. It is the only upper level book that takes a four-skills approach to the further development of language proficiency after students have gone through the basic language sequence. Unlike other texts, Opiniones provides students with an audiolibrary–unscripted, native speakers talking about familiar topics–which bridges the gap between scripted first-year materials and authentic ones. Opiniones continues the solid four-skills approach to language learning that students have been accustomed to during their years of basic language instruction through their High Intermediate/Advanced courses. To the already proven techniques for speaking, reading, and writing, Opiniones adds a new technique called Narrow Listening to help students develop their listening skills. Narrow Listening is an intermediate step between the scripted audio of basic language texts and the unguided listening of authentic texts. Opiniones draws on and incorporates Second Language Acquisition Research, which has demonstrated how crucial explicit practice of listening skills is for successful language learning.
